Cryogenic liquids are particularly hazardous. Their high liquid-to-gas ratios presents a genuinely serious risk of asphyxiation.
This workshop provides theoretical & optional practical training to assist in reducing these risks; it concentrates on the key safety issues for personnel who are involved in the handling, storage or use of cryogenic gases.
Who should attend the Cryogenic Gas User Workshop?
Employees who work with or come into contact with cryogenic gases
Classroom Session (1.5 hours)
- User behaviour & perceptions
- Incident case study
- Gas properties
- Hazards caused by cryogen: cold; asphyxiation; Oxygen enrichment; pressure
- Carbon dioxide & dry ice
- Functions of pressurised vessels
- Dewars
- Ice plugs
- Oxygen enrichment & deficiency
- Cryogenic spillage & emergency procedures
- Embrittlement
- PPE
- First aid
Practical Session: Time dependent upon procedure
The trainer will oversee Cryogenic handling procedures from a bulk tank decant and from a pressurised vessel into a dewar.
An experienced operator must be prepared to perform the procedure under the guidance of the trainer who will check the practice is in line with current Codes of Practice and guidelines.
All Delegates Receive

- Certificate of Attendance
- Dependent upon achieving required level of understanding:
- PGS Gas Safety Passport
- EAL Certificate of Verified Achievement (optional)
Managment receives:
- The PGS Compressed & Cryogenic Gases Site Safety Manual on CD ROM (dependent upon a manager or supervisor attending training)
- Detailed feedback on delegate performance for inclusion in company training records
- A summary of delegate opinions of the training undertaken
- Updates on compressed gases legislation for a period of 3 years after which in line with H & S good practice we recommend refresher training
