Firms urged to pull the plug on £30m of wasted electrical safety tests:

Earlier this month the HSE issued a press release pointing out it is a Myth that every portable electrical appliance in the workplace needs to be tested once a year.

The law requires that employers ensure electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger, it doesn’t state that each item has to be tested or how often testing should be carried out.

To clarify the HSE have issued a revised guidance on portable appliance testing (PAT). Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments

Proactive Gas Safety at MACH Exhibition 2012 – The established showcase for the manufacturing industry

PGS attended MACH as proud members of the AWD – Association of Welding Distribution. It was a very exciting and exhausting week!

Commercial Director Helen Brewin & PGS Staff with Stephen McPartland MP

The PGS team worked hard building existing relationships and making new contacts.

We met budding Welders & Engineers from colleges and apprenticeship schemes from across the country. Students and tutors were particularly interested in our Level 3 Oxy-Fuel Gas Equipment Inspection which awards credits under the Qualification Credits Framework QCF and is accredited by EMTA awards Ltd.

PGS held a daily seminar ‘Gas Cylinders – exploding the myths’ this was well recieved and provided a welcome rest for weary feet.

The highlight of the week was perhaps meeting Stephen McPartland MP. Stephen is a member of the Science & Technology Select Committee and is very keen to promote eduction, training & employment in the technology & manufacturing sector. He is concerned that the majority of skilled welders in the UK are over the age of 50 and is keen to promote apprenticeships and training in this area.

Gas Hose Warning

It has been brought to our attention that sub-standard hose (for use with high pressure gases) is being introduced to the UK market.

The substandard hose has been found to have:

Inconsistent hose wall thickness throughout its length which could lead to the hose bursting under pressure whilst in use.

Poorly applied fittings and with the hose check valves not being made to required standard EN730.

Both EN559, and the more recent BS EN 3821, Hose Standards (Annex D) state:

‘Type testing is carried out by the manufacturer supplying evidence that all the requirements of this International Standard are met by their methods of manufacture and hose design.’

How then can you tell if the hose you have been supplied is fit for purpose and safe to use? If you believe you may have purchased a suspect hose and wish to confirm that it meets the standard, ask to see the manufacturer’s test certificate.

Connecting Gas Cylinders – clearing the valve outlet

The gases industry until quite recently supported the use of a technique known as ‘snifiting’ whereby the cylinder valve is momentarily opened allowing a burst of gas to sweep away debris from the valve outlet. Operator injury has caused this practice to be deemed unacceptable.
